송민규
2026. 8. 28 - 9. 22

Mingyu Song
The SoSo
2026. 8. 28 - 9. 22
Mingyu Song’s first solo exhibition, Level 1; Art is a question of naegong[1], was held at Gallery SoSo in 2008, while he was enrolled in the master’s program at Korea National University of Arts. In the years when he was drawing as widely and as much as he could, the exhibition was like almost everything a single person could hold of spontaneity and order. The subjects ran from a field guide of imaginary creatures to memories of his military service and self-portraits, while the visual language spanned an equally broad spectrum, from free forms to geometric structures. Among the works, Art is a question of naegong (2008) and the My Cleaning Method (2008) series articulated the artist’s fundamental stance and innate temperament through images and textbased titles. In that first solo exhibition, visual effect and the energy of text exploded together. Since then, the artist and the gallery have continued to work together in several group exhibitions, and seven years have passed since their most recent two-person show in 2019. This marks his first solo exhibition at SoSo in eighteen years, a reunion long in coming.
“One day, I was already old.”[2]
The feeling that arises before his paintings, so full of order and harmony, resembles the first sentence of Duras’s novel. It is less resignation to an aged body than a kind of declaration running through a whole life. At some point we leave the childlike sense of time in which the moment before us is everything. We become able to feel the mass and depth of the time we have lived. It is at that very moment that we notice we are already old. How, then, do the eighteen years Song has passed through exist in his finely tuned work?
Song works as though he had made himself into a machine-function,[3] feeding in the life he has directly experienced and putting out the result onto the surface. In his paintings, information gathered from life takes on patterns and is rendered as a diagram. But just as a graph without labels is hard to attach to a referent, his images do not readily tell us what they mean. By presenting an image made of his own order and structure, the artist awakens the viewer’s visual sensibility.
From the beginning until now he has worked in one direction: peeling off the story that clings to an image. Even when drawing an image that showed its content plainly, as in My Cleaning Method, he held to a stance of caricature and exaggeration, bringing a lightness to the work through drawing. This interest in the image itself appeared in the Imaginary Shanghai (2008) series as well. The series is a kind of imagined painting: before his visit to Shanghai, he painted a city he had encountered only through media. His images gesture toward Shanghai without describing it. As early as then, form and content in his work pointed at each other while slipping past one another.
In his current work, marked by a geometric-abstract sensibility, this stance is clear. Swimming Pool Part 1 #06 (2024) depicts a pool at night. Various elements of the pool appear as simplified images, repeated like modules. The lines drawn across the surface trace the trajectories of people who passed through the pool, and their differences—solid and dotted, thick and thin—let movement and time be felt. In Smith Machine Part 1 (2025), movement becomes a site where the motions of different people converge. The work takes the gym machine of the same name as its subject, but instead of describing the machine’s appearance, Song translates the trajectories left by its users into lines. Because everyone uses the same machine, the trajectories resemble one another, yet their shape and range differ with each user’ s age and build, strength and speed. A contrast of warm and cool colors repeats across the entire surface, a pairing he likens to two different stages of life: youth and old age.
In Shared Movements #01 (2026), movement extends to many subjects and the whole landscape is woven into a single structure. All of this spreads across one surface: headlights he meets on the path, people walking or running, the repeating motion of outdoor exercise equipment. Song renders the fast-moving headlights as orange lines and repeats and varies their vanishing paths like modules. Alongside them, lines, dotted lines, and floating spheres cover the entire surface like an all-over painting. What is interesting is that these abstract images sit on a blue ground that looks like water. The blue ground recalls a walk by the water while also offering a clue to perspective, giving depth to the repetition on the flat surface. His abstraction widens the space where sensation can settle.
Gravity Rack (2025) differs in kind: its subject is not landscape or people but the movement of a structure itself.[4] Used everywhere from convenience-store refrigerators to industrial sites, the structure produces a simple but exact movement, sending out first what came in first. Here Song imagines a movement he has not seen, less as arbitrary invention than as prediction that follows the repetition of an algorithm. This kind of movement has long been part of human life and is common, yet his surface, painted as an image of sensation, looks strange. The subject also touches something personal in the artist. The gravity rack’s movement, at once natural and mechanical, is not a distant subject for someone who has made images as a machine-function would. And that first-in, first-out system overlaps with his own cleaning method, which comes from his obsessive habit of classifying and organizing.
With eighteen years in between, the artist returns to two subjects from his first solo show: My Cleaning Method and Imaginary Shanghai, both from 2008. Three plainly drawn charcoal works of My Cleaning Method hang beside their recent counterparts, My Cleaning Method Level 2 (2026), one paired with each. The subject, a person cleaning and a pile of odds and ends, is the same, but in the recent work the figure is turned into pixels and the clutter into round shapes. Inside those circles an abstract image repeats, resembling a traditional Korean landscape painting, though it is in fact stacked bedding. What has changed is the hand that remains on the surface. Charcoal holds the pressure of the grip and the marks of rubbing, but in the pixels and shapes the body of the one who drew grows faint.
The Days Gone By (2026) series hangs next to Imaginary Shanghai. Here the mechanical treatment stands out even more. The scenes are, in turn, a Shanghai sunset, a night view brightly lit, and a night view with every light out. On a single-color ground, basic shapes and various lines appear in cold metallic colors. That coldness collides with warm gradations bleeding here and there, creating tension in a quiet surface. Not long after painting a city he knew only through media, Song actually went to Shanghai. That first work, a kind of imagined painting, has nothing to check it against. The real city, arriving late, was not the source of that picture. What remains is only the picture he himself made. Now, adding the layer of a Shanghai he has actually sensed, he carries the old picture over into his present visual language. To paint an old work again is to face, through a subject that has not changed, a self that has.
When his past work is reinterpreted through the filter of the present, the images of the recent paintings are not reducible to basic shapes. Instead Song translates them again into the visual language he has built up over the years. The “what” and the “how” of his painting are both results of the time he has accumulated. So when the early work and the current work are set side by side, the painterly hand of drawing and the geometric order do not stand opposed, but continue as a single attempt toward an image of his own. What separates the two is not form but the order: which comes first, story or sensation. An image drawn after outward appearance is explanatory and self-contained, so story comes before sensation. In an abstract visual language, however, the image itself and its sensation come first, and Song builds the surface so that they reach the viewer. There is nothing new in saying that form is content. But in his work, form is not self-referential; it is chosen to hold the sensory structure of a scene he has experienced. For him, content is not the object but the way he experiences and senses it, and the way he carries that sensation onto the surface.
This form is closely bound to his working method. He paints on canvas through careful, repeated masking, which makes a diagrammatic surface, as if drafted. Where the tape is lifted, a fine unevenness of pigment appears. The process adds a grain at once mechanical and delicate, and renders with precision what cannot be counted: experience, memory, sensation. The method goes back to the cut-vinyl works of his first solo show. Featuring running figures, rockets, and cityscapes, those works combine mechanical precision with a light, cheerful feeling through computer work and industrial materials. The technique later carries over into painting and acrylic panel installation and settles as one of his main forms.
Stripped of story and familiarity, his surfaces are strange, yet they show the sensation of some landscape with clarity. Before them, we see the structure of an image built from firm logic. But if one day we, too, come to feel that we were “already old,” we will at last sense the lived time layered beneath that firmness. In his work the past is not recalled as a finished event but becomes the structure that makes up the present. Time at the pool, at the gym, on the walking path becomes form and exists within that structure. Above all, before works hung side by side across eighteen years, this becomes a fact we can see. We are standing now inside Mingyu Song’s paintings, where days gone by lie folded over one another.

Jung writes that Song attempts a “becoming-machine.” This essay adds “function” to that term, rereading the machine as a structure with an input and an output.
[4] A gravity rack is a first-in, first-out system known in logistics as a sliding rack or flow rack. Its bed is a slightly inclined roller surface, so goods travel in sequence from the loading side to the picking side without any additional power.
