김택상 작가의 추상작품들은 체화(體化)된 아름다움을 작업 행위로 풀어 낸 결과물이다. 작가는 시간, 바람 등 자신이 체득(體得)한 아름다움의 감각적 빛깔을 탐구해 왔고, 이번 전시에서 자신이 경험해 온 아름다움이 생명(숨-breath)으로 집약됨을 보여준다. 

또한 갤러리 소소에서 5년 만에 열리는 국내 개인전인 '숨 빛-Hue of Breath'을 중심으로 일본 가와무라미술관, 광주 디자인 비엔날레 등 국내외에서 동시에 열리는 전시를 통해 김택상 작가의 근작을 만나 볼 수 있다 김택상 작가의 작업을 들여다보면 여러 색이 캔버스에 머물렀던 흔적이 마치 퇴적층이나 나이테처럼 존재하는 것을 볼 수 있는데 이는 작가의 작업과정에서 기인한다. 

작가는 제작된 틀에 캔버스 천을 놓고, 물감을 희석한 물을 틀에 부어 안료가 침전(沈澱)되기를 기다린다. 그리고 조심스레 물을 빼 내어 캔버스 천을 건조시키는데 이 작업의 과정이 수십 번이고 되풀이 된다.

기나긴 기다림의 작업과정을 통해 작가가 얻고자 하는 것은 '생기가 충만한 아름다움'인데, 그것은 곧 '숨 빛'으로, 작가에게 있어서 아름다움은 살아있는 것 즉, 숨 쉬는 것이고 이처럼 살아있는 것들은 빛을 머금고 있다는 것이다. 

그렇기 때문에 그의 작업이 빛을 머금게 됨은 안료가 화면 위에 덧발라져 캔버스와 외부를 차단시키는 것이 아닌, 스스로 숨을 쉴 수 있는 상태에서 시작된다. 곧 그림 자체가 살아 숨을 쉬기 때문에 빛을 머금은 느낌을 풍기는 것이다. 

앞서 언급한 것과 같이, 김택상의 작업 행위는 반복적으로 진행된다. 이 수십 번의 반복적 과정을 통해 화면 안에는 결을 만들어 낸 모든 기억들 즉 안료의 색깔, 농도, 물의 깊이, 침전과 건조의 시간, 기후 환경 등이 담기게 되며 그의 추상 회화는 한 번도 같을 수 없는 변주를 거듭한다. 

결국, 작가는 자신만의 작업 방식을 통해 일방적으로 작품을 완성시키는 것이 아니라, 자연과 조우(遭遇)하여 작품을 완성하며, 삶에 대한, 그리고 작업에 대한 스스로의 태도를 고스란히 작품으로 보여준다.

Hue of Breathing

Kim Taek-sang’s abstract artworks are the expression of beauty he has met in his life. Kim has been concentrated on the color of wind, time; the things he experienced. And in this exhibition, he focus on the ‘life - breath’ as the hub of his artworks. With the exhibition in the Gallery Soso, his recent pieces are presented inside and outside of Korea. 

On Kim’s canvas, there are many layers of colors which are similar to sedimentary strata or tree rings. It came from the way he works. At the beginning of work, he puts the canvas on the bottom of cask and pours color-mixed water in it. He keeps waiting until the pigment sink on canvas, drains water carefully and dries it. The process is repeated dozens of times for the one complete piece. 

The artist repeats and waits to meet the beauty filled with life, the ‘Hue of Breath’. He thinks that the beauty is living, breathing, so having a color of its own. Kim let the canvas breathe, and that’s why his artworks look holding the light, hue of breath. 

The method of repetition saves all elements of working - color, strength of color, depth of water, time of settle and dry, climate, etc. - in the frame. The oeuvre never could be same and it plays never-ending variations by itself. And at the very last moment, Kim waits for the last touch of the nature. He works in nature, with nature and that shows his attitude to life and art to us.
